Objective:

Ø  The pupil develops observation skill. Identification of different types of inert gases.

Ø  Generalization of properties of inert gases.

Data categorization:

 

T: What are the common properties of elements such as Argon, Oxygen, Carbon, Krypton, Helium, Nitrogen, etc?

            S: They all are non-metals.

            T: Can you say some other non metal?

            S: Yes, Neon, Hydrogen, Sulpher, Chlorine etc.

            T: Can you group these examples and name them according to their similarity.

Neon
Carbon
Argon
Nitrogen
Krypton
Chlorine

 

Phase 2

Interpretation of Data:

 

T: Let me analyze each group of examples and know more about them. What is the peculiarity of elements in each group A.?

            S: They are last group elements.

            T: Anything more.

            S: Their Outer most shell are completely filled.

            T: Yes, they are called Inert gases. What about Group B?

            S: Group element B does not have a completely filled outermost shell.

            T: Yes, can you identify the property of inert gases?

            S: No, teacher.

            T: Their outermost shell is completely filled. Hence they are stable and does not take part in chemical reaction. So they are called inert gases. They are also known as noble gases.

Application of Generalization

 

T: Now, I will give examples of different types of elements. You must name ifs type. Sodium.

            S: Metal.

            T: Why it’s called a metal?

            S: It can donate electrons.

            T: Yes, now Xenon.

            S: Inert gas

            T: Why it’s called inert gas?

            S: It’s stable and do not take part in chemical reaction.

            T: Yes, very good. Radon.

            S: Inert gas.

            T: Potassium.

            S: Metal.

            T: Yes, so inert gases are those elements which are least reactive and most stable.
